Last week, I held my first workshop at the Elkridge Furnace Inn with my dear friend Hailey from Hailey Grace Events. Months ago, we sat down (in chipotle- because who says you can’t have a business meeting in chipotle?) and decided the hold a workshop for photographers all about styled shoots. We wanted a platform to not only share our secrets, tips, and lessons from the past few years of working styled shoots together, but also a chance to meet creatives and build real relationships. The workshop hit on all those things.
We started off with the business benefits of styled shoots and the WHY behind doing them and then moved into “how to plan a styled shoot.” We threw a lot of information at the attendees in just a few hours but they kept up with questions the whole time and took notes in their workbooks for future reflection. We also planned an actual styled shoot for hands-on learning which took place after the teaching portion of the workshop. Hailey styled the most incredible all-white wedding table scape. She knows her stuff you guys!! It was so cool seeing everyone get creative with how they styled the details and how each girl brought her own artistic eye.
The Anne Arundel County Bridal Guide is a new, yearly publication that highlights local wedding vendors in Maryland as well as provide some useful planning tips! I’m proud to have been asked to be a part of this year’s issue! There is a Joy Michelle Photography ad and I helped contribute to an article with writer Hayley Gable of the pasadena voice.
Since this is my first print ad, I’m especially excited to see my work as a tangible print that I can hold! Is it weird that I want to frame my copy? ;)I loved getting the chance to help answer some of bride’s most asked questions when looking for a wedding photographer. Here’s a page from the article with a pull quote below one of my photographs.
It reads, “When you find a photographer you feel comfortable around you will actually receive better photographs in the end because that ease and trust allows your photographer to capture more genuine moments and expression as they unfold.”
If you haven’t already, you can pick up your copy of the Anne Arundel County Bridal Guide at any AAC public library, post office, or anywhere you would find the Pasadena voice or Severna Park voice.
I’m thrilled to announce the secret project I’ve been working on!! I’ve partnered with Hailey Grace Events and a handful of local business to put on a workshop!!
It’s called The Style Shoot Workshop and it will cover the process of planning, photographing and publishing a styled shoot. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in styling and photography while working with models, and leave with fresh portfolio material. You’ll also hear tips about social media, blogging, have open Q & A time, and not to mention a pretty fantastic swag bag and some giveaways! Guest speaker Hailey Grace will be teaching the behind-the-scenes of planning, finding and contacting vendors, and styling.
I’m especially excited about this learning experience because It’s a little different from other workshops. The majority of the day will be spent practicing styling, photographing a real styled shoot, and hands-on learning as opposed to lecture-based events. I think experience is the best teacher and this workshop will give photographers an incredible learning experience.
It will be held on March 18th from 1-5 PM. To get ALL the details and register – visit The Styled Shoot Workshop Website! We’re also super excited to be giving away a seat today!
How to Win a Seat: Head on over to Joy or Hailey’s Instagram and repost the “I want to attend the Styled shoot workshop” image with the hashtag #jmpWORKSHOP. When you repost, share a short paragraph about why you would like to attend the workshop.

Maximize your time and productivity with these tips that I use everyday.
Daily top 3
Sometimes my to-do list is daunting and seemingly never-ending so I don’t want to start it at all. I’ve found that when I decide on just three priorities for my day, it helps me just start! Deciding what makes that list helps me to prioritize. That top 3 gives me clear focus for the rest of the day. I write my top 3 at the top of my day planner each morning.
Goals with steps
The best way to make good use of your time is to know not only your goals but the steps to take so that you are not wandering from task to task. When you make goals, don’t just write down the end goal. Make action steps and write down the action you will take to make it happen. I find this makes it far more likely to happen, and easier to quantify success. Continue reading
